What Would Padre Leo Do?

This book encompassed the constant struggle between fortunate and unfortunate events. The reader follows Enrique’s struggles and triumphs over poverty, starvation, dehydration, and crime. Some of the times of fortune for Enrique and the other migrants are very remarkable. For example, a man named Padre Leo is truly a gift from God to the migrants. Padre Leo is a unique priest in Nuevo Laredo. His secretary, Alma, comments, “He isn't a padre who tells you what to do. He shows you through his actions, through his example. He doesn't pray with rosary or bible. He loves God by doing good toward others. That’s how he teaches you to love God” (Nazario, 171). Padre Leo gives the migrants shelter, food, and clothing. He sacrifices many of his own possessions as gifts to the migrants. Through his charity, Padre Leo loves the migrants, and he is a savior to them. However, Padre Leo isn't only a savior to the migrants because he feeds, clothes, and gives shelter to them. He is a savior to them because of the example he sets. The migrants learn how to love each other and Jesus through following Padre Leo’s example.

Someone who taught me how to love through example was my 4th grade Math and Science teacher, Mrs. El Amri. She always listened to us like we were adults, and she was always kind to her students. She told us stories about her childhood that helped me grasp many life lessons that seemed confusing in the 4th grade. Padre Leo and Mrs. El Amri are two people who taught by example, thus impacting many lives. Who has impacted your life through their example?

  1. This was a great blog entry, Marimac. This summer, I had a counselor at camp who truly changed my life. Alyse Scott, a soccer player for Auburn, was always positive and cared about everyone. She made everyone feel important. Alyse was relateable. She was always willing to give up her time to just talk. Alyse taught me what a true woman of God should act like, and she will always be my biggest role model.

  2. One person who has really impacted my life is my grandmother. Although she is eighty years old, she spends much of her time feeding the hungry and doing service around Nashville. My grandmother has taught me the importance of serving others in need and through her actions, I have become inspired to do more myself. She organizes groups from our church to serve and raises money for various soup kitchens in Nashville. She donates her old clothes and shoes to Loafs and fishes for homeless men, women, and children. She often brings me with her when she works at room at the inn or loafs and fishes and I have grown to love service more and more over the years. She is a very inspirational person and I hope to be more like her when I am older.
