Sacrifices

In the book Enrique's Journey by Sonia Nazario, many of the people she describes make sacrifices for their families. Lourdes, Enrique's mother, is one of those people. She could not watch her family suffer any longer so she sacrificed the love her children had for her and her overall happiness and well being. Lourdes finds it painful to feed a privileged child food when her children are back in Honduras starving. Lourdes tells herself, "I'm giving this girl food instead of feeding my own children" (Nazario 9). Lourdes knows that she has to continue making money this way so she can send her children money to buy food and continue their education. Eventually she does quit this job because it too unbearable, but she sacrifices her happiness for the sake of her children. I think Lourdes is very brave for making the perilous journey to the United States to better life of her family. If you were in Lourdes' position would you be willing to make the sacrifices involved to better the life of your family or suffer with them?
